Winter by Candlelight

My goal for this piece was to explore light in a dim setting. Over the winter months, smaller lights emerge: lamps, string lights, and candlelight become more apparent. I am fascinated with how faces and humans look in low light. Certain features become more dramaticized, while others fade. The blue flames add a magical sense to the piece, representing how winter feels to me.

Capturing escape through a passion is a difficult idea to convey as it looks different for everyone. With this piece, I tried to depict escapism through the swirls and texture coming out of the piece. The many colors reflect the complexity of the subject matter.

Exploring lighting contrasts and including more intricate designs was my focus for this piece. The glowing orb casts harsh shadows on the figures, creating dramatic lighting. Math symbols and graphs reflect my fascination with advanced mathematics and knowledge.

Going into this painting, I wanted to make it personal to him and me. I wrote a letter to him, in which I then highlighted phrases I thought were beautiful or poetic. To put the phrases and words on the painting, I used stamps covered in oil paint.

The Christmas season is the most important time of the year in my family. In our living room, there is a fireplace with a mantle above it, stringed with a lit-up garden and stocking during Christmas. Over the years, I have always found this particular place magical, and intriguing to see how the light interacts with its surroundings.
What Will I Be When I Grow Up?

As I made this piece my first semester at art school, I was feeling sentimental around the passage of time. Since I was away from home, I asked my mom to send me pictures of paintings I did as a child. From there, I picked the paintings that I believed showed the most variety. A little version of me is standing closer to the painting, admiring their her artwork. The recent, older, depiction of me is also admiring her artwork, but standing back to admire her as well.

The summer of my freshman year of college, I spent a lot of time at the beach. Each time I stayed for the sunset, and watching the light dance on the waves and the sand, made me inspired to paint this. I wanted the painting to be colorful, and motivating as I went into the next chapter of my life.
